Barclay & Mathieson Ltd started as a general steel stockholder in 1877 in Wallace Street, Glasgow and moved to its present site in 1957. The company opened a further Scottish site in Aberdeen in 1972.
In the late seventies, Barclay & Mathieson expanded the business by acquiring William Watts Ltd, a company based in Nottingham and continued its growth by opening a new site in Peterborough in 1982 and Carlisle in 1992.
In 1998 it bought Tatham Miller Ltd, a successful stockholding group based in the North West of England. Its sites at that time were located at Cheadle, Wigan, Preston, Liverpool, Sheffield, Bangor and Morecambe. The sites in Preston and Wigan were merged at the end of 2003 on to a purpose build site in Chorley and commenced trading in January 2004. Thereafter, new sites in Brownhills in June 2005 and Inverness in 2008 followed.
In April 2015 Barclay & Mathieson became part of the MBM group of companies, With the access to group’s knowledge and experience in the steel industry Barclay & Mathieson are continuing to grow in new product lines and services.
We have established a strong presence as a general steel stockholder in the Midlands, North of England and Scotland. Our most recent site was opened in the Spring of 2016 in Sittingbourne allowing us to develop our footprint further and supporting the Winchester depot in the South of England.
