Handrail Tubes FAQs

What are handrail tubes made from?

BM Steel handrail tubes are made from high quality stainless steel.

How thick is a handrail tube?

Handrail tubes at BM Steel are 1.5mm, 2mm, and 2.5mm thick.

What is the British standard for handrails?

The rules do depend on whether the use is commercial or residential, but according to Section K of the UK Building Regulations, if stairs are more than 1000mm wide, there must be a handrail on both sides. If the stairs are under this width, only one side requires a handrail. The handrail height should be between 900mm and 1000mm, and this measurement is taken from the pitch line of the staircase or the floor.

What is the best steel for handrails?

For indoor use, grade 304 is the general choice, while grade 316 is ideal for outdoor use. In areas with high humidity or within 10 miles of the coastline, grade 316 in a mirror polish is the norm.
