Re-Rolled Products FAQs

What is Re-Rolled Steel?

Re-Rolled Steel is steel that has been through a work hardening process to change the steel’s shape and structure without using heat. The steel is put through work rolls moving in opposite directions to apply the mechanical stress necessary to create a precise, uniform gauge reduction, enhance dimensional accuracy, and improve the material strength and surface finish without intermediate anneals.

What is Re-Rolled Steel used for?

Re-Rolled Steel is used to manufacture a variety of profiles such as beams, columns, sheets, plates, blooms, billets, and strips.

What are the two types of Rolled Steel?

The two types of Rolled Steel are Hot-Rolled Steel and Cold-Rolled Steel. Hot-Rolled Steel is used in applications where precise specifications and strict tolerances are not required.

Cold-Rolled Steel is used to produce profiles such as beams, columns, and sections.

What is the difference between Hot-Rolled and Cold-Rolled Steel?

Hot-Rolled Steel has been rolled at high temperatures. Cold-Rolled Steel is steel that has been rolled at high temperatures before being further processed in cold reduction materials.

The further processing of Cold-Rolled Steel sees the material cooled before annealing and/or tempers rolling.

Can you weld Hot-Rolled Steel?

Yes, you can weld Hot-Rolled Steel. In addition to welding, this option is a good choice for I-beams and railroad tracks, as precise shapes and smooth finishes are of less concern.

Hot-Rolled Steel offers a wider tolerance range, as the material shrinks when it cools. This means that you cannot be as precise with the measurements.

Can you weld Cold-Rolled Steel?

Yes, you can weld Cold-Rolled Steel. However, remember that Cold-Rolled Steel will take on some of the characteristics and appearance of Hot-Rolled Steel after welding.

Does Hot-Rolled Steel rust?

Yes, Hot-Rolled Steel can rust. This type of steel may be more prone to rust than other types due to its high iron content. Hot-Rolled Steel usually does not receive any special finish during processing, which leaves it exposed to oxygen and water.

Does Cold-Rolled Steel rust?

Yes, Cold-Rolled Steel does rust. In order to counter this type of steel’s susceptibility to rust, most manufacturers apply a rust-preventative oil during the final processing stage.
